Greetings
Repair Cafe.Org is a large world-wide group of volunteers who assist their neighbours reduce, re-use and recycle household appliances. There are now over 3100 groups (called clinics) like ours worldwide.
Many are fearful of taking an appliance/item apart to assess how to conduct a repair. "I've never repaired an item like this before! What if I need a part? It looks too complicated!" are some to the real comments our visitors express.
Our volunteers have many years of experience and many have decades of Professional Trade experience. We teach our neighbours how to diagnose, disassemble and identify if a part needs changing. We discuss where a part might be purchased and help with the decision process of whether to repair the item or recycle it. Many of our clinics average 70% or greater success rate on these repairs.
Some locations have such over-whelming attendance that they have had to institute an appointment process instead of coming to a clinic first-come, first serve.
Our clinics usually start at 10am and conclude about 2pm. We have good success with Saturdays but also we receive good support on a midweek day such as a Tuesday or Wednesday.
We never charge for our services. We encourage our visitors to purchase the replacement parts needed either in advance or to come to the next clinic with that special part. We accept donations and use those funds to purchase specialty tools and supplies that are used in our work. Our Volunteers work without any remuneration and they pay for their own tools and traveling costs to the various sites.
My name is Paul Ellis, a life-long Niagara resident. I spent my entire industrial career locally: I am the son of a tool-maker, a paternal grandson of a home-builder and maternal grandson of watch-maker. Building and repairing seems to be in the DNA.
I have been the volunteer Assistant Coordinator with Burlington Repair Cafe since it was founded and continue to serve with that great group of people. Niagara needs it’s own clinic on a regular basis and here we are!
Come volunteer with us! Visit one of our clinics, sit with one of us and chat. Observe some repairs, bring an item from home that needs assessment. What a great way to see if this cause and volunteer work is for you.
Do you have an indoor location that would permit us to carry on offering this service to our neighbours. Do you an outdoor location to host our summer clinics?
Is there a good time to meet person to person? I'm sure you have questions. I might have some questions too.
If you haven't already done so, please visit RepairCafe.Org and see for yourself why this volunteer work is so close to our hearts.
Please reach out to us. I assure you,
our conversations will be fruitful.
Paul R. Ellis
Coordinator
